After years of enjoying one of America's great cult ski areas ("The best long cruisers and glade skiing in the Rockies," says one reader), the folks in Whitefish, Mont., are about to join the big time.
Erik Schlopy was the first skier on a snowy slalom course. That meant everybody else was racing for second place. Schlopy won the men's slalom Wednesday at U.S. Alpine nationals, beating runner-up Casey Puckett by more than one second.
The Big Mountain Resort is an excellent base camp for exploring Montana's abundant riches. Located 8 miles north of Whitefish and 35 miles east of Glacier National Park, the resort is a hotbed of summer recreation.
