From Halloween to Memorial Day, Killington rocks with an "Endless Winter" attitude. But come June, when the Superstar "glacier" finally bows, the Beast of the East falls gently into the cradle of Vermont. True, the resort revs through Rage Weekend (May 26-28) featuring the lung-busting Killington Triathlon (ski-bike-run). But thereafter soft mountain breezes whisper "no hurries, no worries."
At the golf school, pros slow swing tempos to help students knock down pins on either the resort's own course or neighboring Green Mountain National. The Adventure Center in the base area provides one-stop shopping, Killington-style, with a climbing wall, water slides, in-line skating/skateboarding and the Devil's latest-fat-tire mountain boarding (all-inclusive day pass, $40 adult/$35 junior). To leave it all behind, board the K-1 Gondola for a trip to the top of Vermont's second-highest peak and a walk on the Appalachian Trail. For a more educational outing, pack a picnic lunch and visit the Calvin Coolidge Homestead in Plymouth Notch. Shakespeare under the stars during Renaissance Festival (Aug. 18-19) will certainly make hearts grow fonder, knowing the end of summer-marked by the Killington Stage Race on Labor Day weekend-is just around the corner.
