Summer Resorts 2003: Killington, Vermont

After ample snow this winter, odds are you'll be able to ski here into June. That's appropriate, since Killington prides itself on being the first Eastern resort to open and the last to close. With or without snow, the resort offers plenty of action. A gondola deposits mountainboarders, bikers, hikers and the merely curious atop the resort's 4,241-foot namesake peak, which in 1763 inspired the Rev. Samuel Peters to dub the region "verd mont." Killington can claim seven of them-green mountains, that is, amounting to a vast vertical playground laced with 45 miles of trails.

Families amuse themselves at the Adventure Center, which has a skate park, climbing wall, two water slides, an alpine slide, mini-golf and the "Bungee Thing." The resort's 18-hole golf course, blessed by cool mountain breezes, is narrow and winding enough to challenge elite players. Night owls, having patronized the watering holes that line the access road, might-hangover permitting-make a daytime pilgrimage to the Long Trail brewery in nearby Bridgewater Corners. Aesthetes will also want to wander eastward to Woodstock and Quechee in pursuit of antiques and world-class crafts. In the extreme unlikelihood that you find yourself bored, just wait around a few months: The snow guns fire up again in September.
