GETTING THERE From San Francisco (187 miles, 3 1/2 hours): Take I-80 east to Highway 50, and continue east through Placerville. The ski area is on your right, 45 miles from Placerville. From Reno, Nev. (72 miles, 80 minutes): Take I-395 south through Carson City, Nev.; then Highway 50 west.
STATS Base elevation: 6, 640 feet; vertical rise: 2,212 feet; skiable acres: 2,000; average annual snowfall: 480 inches.
LIFT TICKETS Adult: $50 (ages 23-59); young adult (ages 13-22): $40; child (ages 6-12): $10. Half-day tickets, $37, $30 and $10, respectively. Kids under 5 ski free. Season passes are $399, but if you are a frequent visitor, then the Vertical Plus program is the way to go. For a registration fee of $69, receive $7 off every lift ticket all season, plus ski one day (Sunday-Friday) during the season for free. The Vertical Plus pass includes a wristband that tracks the amount of vertical feet skied throughout the season.
LODGING There are no on-mountain accommodations at Sierra-at-Tahoe. Your best bet is to stay in South Lake Tahoe, less than 20 minutes away. The resort offers discounted ski-and-stay packages through a variety of properties in South Lake. Choices range from premier (Embassy Suites, 800-988-9895, $353-$409) to value (Chateau Inn & Suites, 530-541-6060, $32-$159). For package information, call 800-288-2463. For a longer stay, Lake Tahoe Accommodations (800-544-3234, www.tahoeaccommodations.com) offers lakefront properties, mountain chalets and condominiums.
