Laurel Mountain, PA, to Reopen This Season

Ligonier Township, PA, Nov. 29--Get ready Western Pennsylvania. You're the proud recipients of a new ski area--actually, it's an old one with a new look. Laurel Mountain Ski Company is planning a comeback for the once defunct ski area under new owner and president, George W. Mowl.

Mowl, a Pittsburgh real estate developer, signed a 35-year lease with the state for the mountain and plans to develop the 500-acre area into a ski resort that caters to families and groups.

Complete with a new 14,200-square-foot base lodge, a new quad chairlift, a refurbished double chairlift, and a state-of-the-art snowmaking system, Laurel Mountain expects to open in early December.

"We're so excited to bring skiing back to the people of Ligonier Township," said President, George Mowl. "It should be good business for both the town and its residents."

The 2,780-foot mountain will run two lifts servicing 11 trails (90 acres) this year, with six more trails to open in winter 2000-2001. Laurel Mountain will pride itself on its terrain and affordable price. A $300 season pass and $19 weekday tickets and $29 weekend tickets all season will make Laurel Mountain one of the most affordable areas in the region.

"We want to be a middle-class mountain," continued Mowl. "We want to make Laurel Mountain affordable for a family to come up and ski for the weekend without breaking their wallet."

Future plans for the resort are still undecided, but, with only one-fifth of the area's acreage in use, one can only speculate. According to Mowl, the Laurel Mountain Ski Company wants to see how this season goes before making any future plans.
