Chalet Landhaus Inn
New Glarus, Wis.

(Approximately 22 miles from Tyrol Basin.)

New Glarus, Wis., isn't in the Swiss Alps, but it sure tries to be. The Chalet Landhaus, a charming Bernese-style chalet, offers the ambience of a European inn, with wooden balconies, hand-painted Swiss murals, a stone fireplace, American and Swiss-cuisine restaurants and the Apli Bar. Cozy rooms with wood-beamed ceilings (some with balconies), Swiss mountain scenes and yodeling music on local cable create a slice-of-the-Alps atmosphere. Chalet amenities include an indoor pool, sauna and fitness room.

New Glarus is famous for its Swiss heritage, chalet architecture and year-round Swiss festivals. The chalet is within walking distance of shopping and nightlife, including weekend dancing with Roger Bright's live band at the New Glarus Hotel.

Lodging: per night (Friday/Saturday): one person $69; two people $89 (free breakfast buffet). The winter weekend package is $159 for two (Thursday-Saturday check-in), and includes two nights' lodging, two breakfasts for two, and two coupons for 10 percent off dinner at the New Glarus Hotel ($2 discount on lift ticket). Not available New Years Eve, Jan. 1 or Winterfest weekend. Information: Chalet Landhaus Inn, 801 Hwy 69, P.O. Box 878, New Glarus, WI 53574. Reservations 800-944-1716; 608-527-5234; www.chaletlandhaus.com
