Summer Resorts 2000¿Far West, Mt. Bachelor, Ore.

Features
By Greg Trinker

Mt. Bachelor and its home base of Bend, Ore., are heaven for Type A personalities: The problem is not what to do but how to do it all. The premier golf destination in the Northwest, the region boasts 25 courses (try Crosswater at Sunriver, 800-737-1034; www.sunriver-resort.com). Or get into oxygen debt on miles of hiking and mountain biking trails. Keep up the pace by rafting the famous whitewater of the Deschutes River or by rock-jocking the world-class pinnacles and peaks of the rugged Cascades.

To lower your lactic acid count, enjoy fly-fishing or glide into nirvana during moonlight canoe trips on the Cascade Lakes. For family fun, ride the Summit Express chair to the 9,065-foot summit¿and, yes, those are active volcanic domes.

Now head to Bend. With its sophisticated lodging, dining and shopping, and its proximity to enough outdoor activities to bonk any Baby Boomer, this community is a perennial selection on those "Best Places To Live" lists. Oregon's greatest secret? Bend basks in 250 days of sunshine a year. The truly committed can enter "Pole, Pedal, Paddle," an annual multi-sport competition in May. Or go skiing. July 4th usually can be celebrated with fireworks and turns on Mt. Bachelor (800-829-2442; www.mtbachelor.com). Tired yet?

  • DON'T MISS
  • The High Desert Museum. Four miles south of Bend, this "living museum" celebrates regional history with live animals, art galleries and pioneer artifact.
  • BEST DEAL
  • Sunriver Resort offers golf, lodging and adventure packages starting at $69 per person per night. Call the Central Oregon Visitors Association at (800) 800-8334, or visit http://www.covisitors.com "> www.covisitors.com
