Summer Resorts 2001- Southern Rockies, Keystone, Colo.

School may be out for the summer, but classes are still in session at Keystone. This mountain resort takes a scholarly approach to summer fun with the Alpine Institute, where you can take hands-on courses in cooking, art, gardening, golf and sailing, just to name a few.

Extend your education with a Mountain Passport (two are included with every room reservation), your ticket to mountain bike clinics, guided nature hikes, tennis clinics, boat and in-line skate rentals, horsemanship clinics and much more.

If you don't ditch class to hit the factory-outlet haven of Silverthorne 10 miles west, there are plenty of opportunities at the resort to put your new-found skills to use. Keystone has long been famous for its Robert Trent Jones Jr.-designed Ranch Golf Course, which in 2000 was named one of the best courses for women by Golf For Women magazine. Then last year, the resort debuted the 18-hole championship River Course, designed by Michael Hurdzan and Dana Fry and considered one of the most scenic courses in Colorado. After you've navigated past the 12 bunkers on the 18th hole of the River Course, trade your clubs for a bike to explore Keystone's web of trails and paths in and around the resort. The well-designed trail system draws the mountain-bike faithful from all over Colorado, some of whom kick off the season with the Uphill Mountain Bike Challenge on June 9. Others settle for riding the gondola up for a technical singletrack ride back to River Run Village, where the brightest students know to hit the Kickapoo Tavern for some après-bike refreshment.

  • DON'T MISS Keystone I, the resort's sailboat, sets sail on Lake Dillon several times a day. For $30, the skipper will guide you on a 90-minute tour.
  • BEST DEAL One night's lodging, a round of golf at the Ranch Course or new River Course, a one-hour golf range pass, wine tasting, mountain bike clinic, barn dance, tennis clinic and nature hike, for $147 per person, per night. Call 800-404-3535, or visit
