Charles Schwab to Sponsor Birds of Prey World Cup Races

BEAVER CREEK, CO (News Release - Oct. 31, 2007) - Charles Schwab, proud sponsor of the U.S. Ski Team and U.S. Snowboarding since 1997, will become the title sponsor of the Charles Schwab Birds of Prey race week at Beaver Creek Resort, Nov. 27-Dec. 2, officials announced today. It is the fourth stop of the men's Audi FIS World Cup tour and one of alpine racing's marquee events of the season.

"We are proud of our continuing affiliation with the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association, and extremely pleased to become title sponsor of Birds of Prey race week in Beaver Creek," said Derek Benbow, director of corporate sponsorships for Charles Schwab. "It is exciting to be involved in an international event that brings the best alpine ski racers to one of the most technical race courses in the world."

Charles Schwab, one of the USSA's longest running supporters, has been a sponsor of the men's Birds of Prey races since they began at the start of the 1998 Olympic season. The company also participated in the 1999 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships, the highest level of racing below the Olympics, at Beaver Creek and nearby Vail Resort.

"For Charles Schwab to become the title sponsor of this incredible race week is great news and a testament to the value they see in our partnership, as well as this incredible event," said Ted Morris, USSA vice president of sales and marketing. "Schwab's support of the Teams over the last decade has made a difference in our success and we're excited to showcase Charles Schwab at these international races."

The races at Beaver Creek have grown over the years in worldwide stature and are the only four-race stop on the circuit, apart from World Cup Finals that conclude the season each March.

Over the last five years the U.S. Ski Team has produced several historic results that riveted the crowds at Beaver Creek each December, including Daron Rahlves (Sugar Bowl, CA) winning the downhill in 2003. At the time, Rahlves was the first American man to win on U.S. snow in more than 20 years. In 2005, the U.S. squad had an historic five U.S. top-3 results in 72 hours including Rahlves' and Bode Miller's (Bretton Woods, NH) 1-2 and 2-1 finishes in the downhill and GS, respectively. That same week, Ted Ligety (Park City, UT), who went on to win an Olympic gold medal less than two months later, was third in the slalom for his first World Cup podium.

Last winter, Birds of Prey race week fans watched Miller win the downhill while rookie Steven Nyman (Orem, UT) finished third for his first World Cup podium finish. Ligety also finished third in the GS the next day.

Versus will cover all the races with two-hour telecasts on Dec. 9 at 4 p.m. ET with the super G and combined, and on Dec. 16 at 4 p.m. ET with the downhill and GS. (Note: Check local listings as broadcast times and dates subject to change.) The races will also be webcast on WCSN.com, plus will be available for on-demand viewing.
