The moguls star abandons his third Olympic bid: "passion wasn't there"

Bloom Calls it Quits

Olympic freeskier Jeremy Bloom officially retired from the sport this week, saying he was abandoning his bid to make his third Olympic team because “the passion wasn’t there anymore.”

Bloom claims eleven World Cup titles—winning six straight World Cup competitions in 2005 alone—and competed in the 2002 and 2006 Winter Games, where he finished ninth and sixth, respectively.

A true all-around athlete, Bloom was a standout football star at the University of Colorado, where he was named to the Freshman All-Star team and went on to set myriad school records, including the longest touchdown reception in school history, 96 yards. A battle with the NCAA to carry on both his football and skiing careers led him to quit football and focus on skiing in 2005.

After the Turin Olympics, Bloom decided to shift his focus back to football and landed with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2006. After an injury that sidelined him for the season, Bloom was released from the Eagles and picked up by the Pittsburgh Steelers for a stint that lasted through the first nine months of 2008. Later that year he expressed an interested in rejoining the U.S. Ski Team for a possible run at the 2010 Whistler Games. On Dec. 16, he made the team, but after settling into the rigorous training schedule, decided his heart just wasn’t in it.

The 27-year-old Colorado native will focus on the charity he started in early 2008, the Jeremy Bloom Wish of a Lifetime Foundation, created to grant wishes to low-income senior citizens, and has been dabbling in TV commentary on ESPN. We bet we’ll see him around—be it on the football field, on the slopes, or, likely, both.
