MT. HOOD, OR (Mt. Hood Meadows Press Release)—Mt. Hood Meadows will open for the 2006/2007 season this Saturday (December 9). The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) announced today that highway 35 will reopen at 5 AM Saturday, allowing public access to the resort for the first time since a glacial outburst washed out the road on either side of the ski area's access road November 7.

Resort officials say Meadows will ease right into full operations — with lifts operating Saturday from 9 AM to 10 PM. The number of lifts and trails that will open will be determined later this week, but Resort President and C.O.O. Dave Riley said it will be a bigger than usual opening. "We have five feet of settled snow in the base area, more than six feet at mid-mountain, and we've had time to groom it. That is substantially more than what we would normally open with and we look forward to getting as much of the mountain open as conditions will allow.

Meadows will operate on its regular daily schedule — the scope of operations will be updated on the resort web site later this week.

Hundreds of staff members who have been "on hold while the road was repaired will be reporting to work this week. Meadows will be fully staffed, including its ski and snowboard school, Children's Learning Center, certified Day Care Center, equipment rental center, High Performance demo center, retail shops and restaurants.

Meadows will debut "Paradise Parks freestyle terrain with "Rose City Park, the "Vista Pipe and "Shipyard scheduled to operate. "The Wall a 14 foot tall, 24 foot long wall will be just one of the many features freestylers will be able to enjoy opening day. Riley commended ODOT and the U.S. Forest Service for getting highway 35 reopened a week ahead of schedule. "This has been a gargantuan effort considering the damage which was done less than a month ago. The immediate response from Governor Kulongoski, as well as state and federal elected officials provided the resources to get this highway open fast.

Now — let the season begin!
