Mt Rose Adds New Lift and 200 Acres

Mt Rose Adds New Lift and 200 Acres

Lake Tahoe, Nev Sept. 13, 2004 - After years of working with the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest to complete a new master development plan, Mt. Rose-Ski Tahoe is planning to unveil a host of improvements for the 2004-05 winter including a new, six-passenger chair lift in the East Bowl and the long-anticipated opening of The Chutes that will rank among some of the steepest in-bounds skiing in the US.

Mt. Rose has finalized the purchase of the new six-passenger, detachable chairlift for the East Bowl, (formerly Slide Mountain), which will result in high-speed, base-to-summit access to the East Bowl's 550 acres of blue and black runs, Double Down & Badlands terrain parks, some of the best glades in Tahoe, and wide open bowl skiing.

Manufactured and installed by Doppelmayr CTEC Inc., the new lift will significantly reduce ride time and increase the uphill capacity by 33%, a third more than the Zephyr fixed grip quad chair it will replace. Following the same alignment as its predecessor, the tentatively named Blazing Zephyr chair will whisk up to 3,600 skiers and snowboarders per hour from the base (8,240') to the summit (9,700') in an average ride time of only 3½ minutes. And with an approximate six-second interval time between chairs, riders will have ample time to load and then exit the lift at the summit. A new grading plan for the unloading area will create a more uniform slope for improved access to the southernmost trails.

Similar to the Northwest Magnum 6 that serves the main side of Mt. Rose-Ski Tahoe, the chairs weigh nearly 1,000 pounds each and are heavy enough to operate in high winds, enabling more consistent operations during Tahoe's stormy periods that effect many Lake Tahoe ski areas.

The purchase of the new high speed lift represents just one of the many components of Mt. Rose — Ski Tahoe's Master Development plan now unfolding at Tahoe's Highest Base Resort. 2004-05 will also see the opening of new lift-accessed terrain commonly referred to as "The Chutes. Boasting almost 200 skiable acres and plunging nearly 1,500 vertical feet, this legendary north-facing bowl will add double-black diamond terrain to Mt. Rose — Ski Tahoe. The Chutes will be easily accessed via eight entry gates from both six-pack summit lifts, and comprise approximately 200 acres with 16 named trails (nine double black diamond & seven black diamond.) Exiting The Chutes will be via the new "Chuter chair (the former Zephyr quad chairlift that will be re-installed in the Chutes) returning many adrenaline-charged powder hounds to the East Bowl.

Terrain expansion including both the Chutes as well as a former "out of bounds bowl on the northwest side of the mountain will increase the skiable acreage to over 1,200 acres while the total vertical rise at Mt. Rose will increase to 1,800'.

The purchase of the New High Speed Blazing Zephyr lift and the reinstalled Chuter lift represent a four million dollar capital investment. Additional future plans under the Master Development Plan will also include a new East Bow Lodge and the introduction of top to bottom snowmaking at the East Bowl.
