Warren, Vt., July 27, 2000--After almost 20 years ofdiscussion, the U.S. Forest Service and Sugarbush Resort announcedyesterday they had completed a land exchange that swapped 213 acres ofprivate land owned by Sugarbush for 57.7 acres of public land encompassingmost of the base area of Lincoln Peak.

As part of the deal, Sugarbush will also pay the Forest Service $415,000 to purchase lands in the nearby areaas desired by the town of Warren. Of the 213 acres received by the Forest Service, which sits southeast of Lincoln Peak, about 73 acres will be addedto Sugarbush's Special Use Permit. The remainder will be designated as openspace.

"This is a good exchange for all parties," said Bruce McCloy, managingdirector of Sugarbush. "The land the Forest Service acquired is more suitedto national forest purposes than the land it traded."

The 57.7-acre parcelthat Sugarbush received was under long-term lease to the resort and is thesite of two parking lots and numerous base area buildings, and means theresort can begin rebuilding its main base area. No timeline has been setfor projects, though McCloy has said they include increasing base lodgeseating, skier services and possibly a hotel.
