WATERVILLE VALLEY 255 skiable acres; 4,004-foot summit elevation; 2,020 vertical feet; 52 trails; 132 annual inches; two high-speed quads, two triples, three doubles, four surface lifts. Tickets: adults $39, holidays $53.

LODGING Greater Waterville Valley boasts some 2,500 beds in a constellation of predictably nice, country-modern hotels, inns and condos. The Golden Eagle condos ($151—$309) are the newest and perhaps cushiest; the Black Bear ($135—$270) is also clean and nice; 800-468-2553,

DINING The best local dining is right on campus, at theDiamond's Edge North in Town Square, where the menu roams around the world (the Asian options are superb); 603-236-2006, The Wild Coyote Grill, within the Athletic Center, serves tasty casual fare; 603-236-4919. If you're willing to start the car, the William Tell, just down the road, offers hearty Swiss standards; 603-726-3618.

APRÈS-SKI The scene,such as it is (this is a family-oriented resort), centers on Legends, a dance bar in Town Square, and the on-mountain restaurant/lounge T-Bars, decorated with vintage photos from the resort's late-'60s origins.

GETTING THERE From New York City (5 1/2 hours): Take I-95 north to New Haven, Conn.; I-91 north to Hartford; I-84 east to the Mass Pike (I-90); Route 495 north to I-93, Exit 28; Route 49 east 11 miles to Waterville Valley. From Boston (2 hours): Take I-93 north; then same as above.
