Sleeping Giant, Wyo., Reawakens
SKI Magazine loves its little home hill of Eldora Mountain Resort outside Boulder, Colo. Everybody should have a home hill: big enough to get in some steep thrills, small enough so the kids won't ever get lost, with a cafeteria that's more high school than high style, but whose chili is second to none. (Ropetows are always an authentic touch, but not a requirement for true home-hill status.) So that's why we're glad to see the Cody, Wyoming's Sleeping Giant Ski Area reawaken after more than five years of defunctitude. The small resort closed in 2004 after a series of bad financial and meteorological circumstances, but since 2007 a group of locals has worked to reopen the hill, fronting money for repairs, upgrades and expansions. Runs were extended, new terrain was cleared, and a new triple was installed, and finally last Saturday Sleeping Giant hosted a crowd of eager skiers and boarders happy to be skiing near home for the first time since 2005. The SKI staff offers its most heartfelt congratulations.
