ZAGREB, Croatia (AP)--Olympic champion Janica Kostelic had surgery on her right knee and will miss the opening races of the World Cup ski season.
The Croatian star is expected to be sidelined at least six weeks. This was the fourth operation in five months for the three-time Olympic gold medalist and two-time World Cup champion.
Doctors removed cartilage fragments in Monday's operation in the Austrian town of Shruns, near where Kostelic had been training, spokesman Ozren Mueller said Tuesday.
Kostelic began experiencing sharp pain as she increased her training leading to the season, Mueller added.
