Mammoth Lakes, CA September 16--The summer has been booming at Mammoth Mountain, CA. They have invested $20 million on upgrades as part of a five-year $130 million master improvement plan.

Although Intrawest owns a 59-percent stake in Mammoth, the two remain separate entities. Mammoth Mountain takes care of the on-mountain upgrades while Intrawest is responsible for the area's real estate development.

This summer's improvements, funded by Mammoth, include a new gondola system and lower gondola-station, an additional high-speed quad, and expanded snowmaking.

Mammoth's new Panorama Gondola will transport eight passengers 2,000 feet in less than nine minutes to the 11,053-foot peak. Wow! Can you say g-force? The gondola will take off from the new 13,500 square-foot Panorama Station, located between the Main Lodge and the Mammoth Mountain Inn. The station will be home to Woolywood, the Mammoth Kids Sports Center, ticket sales, and basic skier services.

The new Discovery Chair high-speed quad will replace Chairs 11 and 27 and service beginner terrain at the Main Lodge area. This chair will increase capacity from 1,200 skiers an hour to 2,800 skiers an hour and have a vertical rise of 2,080 feet.

Mammoth also boosted snowmaking to about 25 percent of the mountain's groomed trails and gave a facelift to three of the on-mountain lodges.

About to complete their third year of expansion, Mammoth Mountain plans to finish their improvements by the 2002 season.
