Josef Strobl Wins St. Anton Super G

St. Anton, Austria, Feb. 12-- The treacherous combination of a steep course and soft snow meant trouble Saturday for 25 World Cup ski racers in a super G on the 2001 World Championships course. Joseph (Pepi)Strobl won the race with Paul Casey Puckett (Crested Butte, CO) 28th andJake Fiala (Breckenridge, CO) tied for 29th.

Outdoor Life Network will broadcast coverage of the race at 7 p.m. ESTtoday. The race originally had been scheduled as a DH but officialsswitched it to a super G - with the DH to be made up in Kvitfjell,Norway, in March - when two days of training were canceled because ofbad weather.

Strobl's winning time was 1:23.41 with Swiss racer Didier Cuche second(1:23.54) and Stephan Eberharter of Austria third (1:23.55). Completingthe top five were another Austrian, Werner Franz - who competes Feb.17-18 in two DHs at the inaugural Winter Goodwill Games in Lake Placid,N.Y., in fourth place with Sweden's Fred Nyberg fifth.

Puckett, starting 47th, was 29th in 1:26.96 with Fiala tied for 30th in1:26.99. Daron Rahlves (Truckee, CA) was disqualified for skiing into agate panel while Chris Puckett (Boulder, CO) was a DNF.

World Cup leader Hermann Maier of Austria, who had won all threeprevious World Cup super Gs this season, was among the throng of DNFs,going out after about six gates. "Yeah, he didn't go very far," saidU.S. Head Coach Bill Egan. "I think it was the same gate that gotChris...

"This is a very difficult course - the maximum vertical and just aboutminimum length. I think it's something they'll have to address beforenext year," Egan said. "It's just so steep. It's hard to put all thegates in."

Egan added, "'PC' did a great job. It was really difficult when he wentand he had really had to work to get in there. He skied like crazy. Heand Jake who ran 34th really skied hard, giving it every effort."Rahlves, he said, "was really hauling when he went out - he skied into apanel - about three gates from the end, or he'd've been in there."

Two days of storms and poor visibility took their toll on the course.Snow conditions were "hard and crunchy and soft and hard. It reallywasn't very good," Egan said. "They think they've got the answers overhere, but Mother Nature's still in control."

The men race another super G Sunday before heading to Adelboden,Switzerland, for a GS/SL combination Feb. 19-20.
