Portland, OR, April 14, 2001--Former Olympic champion Bill Johnson, continuing to make a strong recovery from brain surgery, is out of a coma and entering the next phase of his rehabilitation, according to his new hospital.

Dr. Molly Hoeflich, director of the rehabilitation unit at Providence Portland Medical Center, said Johnson continues tomake small movements on his own and "is waking up." Johnson, who turned 41 on March 30, no longer is considered to be ina coma, she said Friday.

Johnson, the 1984 Olympic downhill champion who was attempting a racing comeback, crashed March 22 during a downhillrace at Big Mountain and underwent surgery at Kalispell Regional Medical Center.
