Yes, skis should be carried with the ski tips in front of your shoulder.
It is easier to carry skis this way because it takes less effort to hold them up. This is because the space front of the binding is longer than the space behind the binding. That long leaver is at the front, meaning it takes less force to balance the skis.

tomg is right. Also, the less ski you have "behind" you, the less chance of inadvertently hitting someone with it if you make a sudden turn.
