  • Vital Stats 30 skiable acres; 440 vertical feet; 6,696 base elevation; 7,136 foot summit elevation; one halfpipe; 19 trails; 20K of cross-country trails; 250 annual inches; snowmaking on the entire frontside; one poma, one pony-tow and one double chair that only runs on busy weekends.
  • Ticket Prices Before Jan. 1, season passes cost $30-$100 for individuals, $200 for families. Full-day tickets cost $8-$15. Tuesday through Thursday, you can ski from 5 p.m.-8:30 p.m. for just $5. Ski any day at lunch for $3.
  • Java Joints Mocha Molly's for strong coffee and impossible-to-resist scones.
  • Dining Support the SSWSC-eat at the snack bar. If a hot dog and cocoa just isn't going to sate your appetite, head across the river to the Double Z for stellar barbecue and a Bud.
  • Lodging The Rabbit Ears motel isn't fancy, but it's ideally located on Steamboat's main drag and only two blocks from Howelsen ($95-$119; 800-828-7702; rabbitearsmotel.com).
  • Après-Ski A quick walk across the Fifth Street Bridge opens up all sorts of options. The closest is the Steamboat Brewery & Tavern, just one block up from the bridge, which serves homemade brew (root beer, too), yummy apps and everything from three-pepper-crusted tuna to a stromboli Siciliano.
  • Locals' Tip There is no Winter Carnival like Steamboat's. Held annually in February, it features 30 events throughout the week and culminates with a big bang: The lighted man and fireworks. Whatever you do, don't miss the skijoring down Lincoln Avenue (main street).
  • Getting There From Denver, take I-70 west 60 miles to Dillon; from Dillon, go 40 miles west on Route 9 to Kremmling; from there, it's another 40 miles west on Route 40. Head into town, make a left on Fifth Street, cross the bridge, make a right at the rodeo grounds, and you'll run into Howelsen.
