Getting There From Philadelphia, Allentown, southern New Jersey or Delaware, take I-476 to Exit 39, then I-81 north to Exit 63, then Route 374 east (about 2 hours and 20 minutes from Philadelphia). From New York City or northern New Jersey take I-80 west to I-380 west, then I-81 north to Exit 63, then Route 374 east.
Vital Stats Skiable Terrain: 130 acres; number of lifts: 6; nightskiing: every night; base elevation: 1,693 feet; summit elevation: 2,693 feet; vertical drop: 1,000 feet; annual snowfall: 75 inches; snowmaking: 88 percent of mountain; length of season: early December through March.Lift tickets: Weekend/holiday, $43; weekdays, $37; children (6-12) and seniors, $33/$28.
Sleeping In In Union Dale, try the Stone Bridge Inn (quaint European styling, indoor pool; 570-679-9200). In Clarks Summit, try the Inn at Nichols Village (full-service resort with indoor pool and two restaurants; 570-587-1135), the Ramada Plaza Hotel (full-service with indoor pool; 570-586-2730), or the Hampton Inn (budget accommodations; 570-586-1515). Local B&Bs include: the Carousel (570-679-2600), the Andrew Paye (570-679-2200), the Ski Habit (570-222-2754), the Wiffy Bog (570-222-7777).
Dining Out Bingham's and the Elk Diner both serve hearty breakfasts. For lunch or a gourmet dinner, try Elk Mountain's own slopeside Winter Garden (weekends only). Two nearby hotels also offer fine dining: the Stone Bridge Inn (see above) and Oliveri's Crystal Lake Hotel, about 10 minutes away in Carbondale (570-222-3181).
AprÈs-Ski Humble Chet's Place, two miles from the mountain, is where the locals hang out (and where you can rent cross-country skis). For a more upscale ambience, try Oliveri's Crystal Lake Hotel.
Don't Miss Elk's homemade chili in the lodge.
