Jack of all trades, master of none, Loon makes no boasts about having the longest, widest or steepest anything in New England. The area, however, does offer trails long enough, wide enough and steep enough to entertain most recreational skiers this side of Chamonix. "Although it's fairly small, Loon's layout makes it feel much larger," a reader says. Skiers looping on the easier West Basin and Kissing Cousin chairs should set up at the Governor Adams base area. If the tougher North Peak trails are your meat, work out of the Octagon lodge. A quaint train chugs the few hundred yards between the two. When half of Boston shows up on a powder morning, it's nice to know lift tickets are limited to 6,100 daily. Sellouts don't occur often, but make sure you're safe by reserving tickets. For Bostonians, it's a quick 2 1/2 hour trip and less than a mile from I-93 to parking. The Loon region is chock-a-block with lodging¿13,000 beds¿much of it reasonably priced.

What's New An expanded free shuttle from Lincoln and North Woodstock. Big plans for a trail link to Lincoln were scuttled by no-growth forces. New owner Booth Creek Holdings will try again this year.
A Good Deal Book a lodging package with one of 40 participating properties and save up to 33 percent on lift tickets, which also are good at Cannon Mountain; (800) 229-STAY.
Don't Miss The Wildlife Theater show, daily at 4 pm. Admission is $3-$5, children under five are free.
Medals Gold Accessibility; Silver Snow Quality, Grooming, Terrain, Lifts, Family Programs.
High/Low Rank Accessibility (5); Value (74).
Reader Remarks "The trails are fast and the lines short." "Mountain could use more grooming."
