French Skiers Quizzed in Death

Innsbruck, Austria, Jan. 8, 2002 (AP)--Fifteen French skiers and ski team officials will be questioned this week as part of the investigation into French ski star Regine Cavagnoud's death, an official of the state attorney's office said Tuesday.

Cavagnoud died two days after slamming into a German ski trainer during a practice run on Austria's Pitztal glacier on Oct. 29.

The French skiers and officials would be questioned Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, Rudolf Koll told The Associated Press.

``We need the testimonies from all involved,'' he said. ``When we have all the testimonies, we'll decide if anyone, and if so, whom, should be charged.''

A decision about whether to charge anyone could come in a month or two. German skiers and team officials were questioned in December.

All trainers involved in the Oct. 29 practice _ three German, and three French _ are considered suspects, Koll said.

They include Markus Anwander, with whom Cavagnoud collided. Anwander was seriously injured in the crash and spent nearly two weeks in a coma. He has said he considers himself innocent even though he does not remember anything from the accident.

Austrian investigators earlier said that poor coordination of the joint training session and communication problems between the teams appeared to have contributed to the accident.

The teams communicated on different radio frequencies and did not speak each other's language well.

Cavagnoud, 31, won the super G title at last year's World Championships in St. Anton, Austria and was third overall in the World Cup standings.
