Ligety, Richardson Shine in Team Event

March 16, 2007
LENZERHEIDE, SWITZERLAND - (USST News Bureau Release) - Ted Ligety (Park City, UT) produced the fastest slalom leg Friday and Kaylin Richardson (Edina, MN) had the second-fastest in her heat as the U.S. Ski Team finished sixth in the team event at World Cup Finals.

WCSN.com will broadcast same-day video streaming from World Cup Finals at 2 p.m. ET.

Austria won the seven-nation event with 23 points after eight runs - four in super G, four in slalom; points are awarded on a "place points: basis for each heat, e.g., finishing first is one point, second two, etc. The nation with the lowest points overall is the team champion. No World Cup points are at stake in the team event, but Nations Cup points are awarded.

"We still aren't skiing up to our potential, skiing like we know these athletes can, but this was a big improvement. We got people into the finish and we had some good speed at the end. Ted did an outstanding job in the last run, and Kaylin had a solid run," U.S. Alpine Director Jesse Hunt said. Steven Nyman (Provo, UT) was third-fastest on his super G heat.

"We were humiliated the last time (in Are, Sweden - finishing last among 11 teams at World Championships) with so many crashes, and I feel much better about the effort and the energy this time. We're back on our feet and getting people down the hill, and that's a good step forward," Hunt said.

The SG heats were run by Nyman, Bode Miller (Bretton Woods, NH), Stacey Cook (Mammoth Mountain, CA) and Resi Stiegler (Jackson Hole, WY) with Ligety, Miller, Richardson and Stiegler competing in slalom over the sunny, springtime conditions.

World Cup Finals returns to individual racing Saturday with a women's slalom and men's giant slalom. Women's slalom is scheduled for 4 a.m. and 6:30 a.m. ET with the men's GS set for 5 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. ET; live interval timing is available at http://livetiming.usskiteam.com, and WCSN.com will have same-day video streaming at noon and 4 p.m. ET of the women's SL and 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. ET.
