Winter is coming to town. Boreal, CA, opened briefly between Oct. 11-14 and Big Sky, MT, with the help of a mammoth three-foot dump, opened terrain covered entirely by natural snow on Monday, Oct. 17. Around the country snowmaking crews test out their equipment as temperatures fall and the buzz of winter hits mountain ski towns and urban ski shops alike.
Early season skiing is always contingent on weather and all scheduled openings are tentative. It's a good idea to check a mountain's site or call their information desk before heading up for opening day festivities and first tracks. Make sure to smile at the snow gods daily; our blanket of white is just around the next cloud.
