Mammoth Powder Invades Spring SnowSplash Weekend

Mammoth Lakes, CA, April 26, 2001--Anticipating skiing a mountain covered in snow the consistency of a slurpee, I instead found myself pleasantly greeted by 30 inches of new snow at Mammoth Mountain, making for the best days of spring skiing I've ever had.

With over two feet of powder gracing the slopes and base area last Saturday morning and more still coming down, the Pond Skim was postponed until the weather cleared. But the weather couldn't have been any more perfect for skiers looking for some great late-season skiing. Although most upper lifts were closed Friday on account of the high winds that blew in the bounteous snow, all lifts were running on Saturday.

Fueled by free Power Bars procured at the Canyon Lodge base area, I took advantage of the open lifts and skied the knee-deep powder virtually non-stop until closing time. Tired and sore, but fueled by adrenaline from powder shots, I headed back to Canyon Lodge for some drink specials and music by Keyser Soze, a Reno-Tahoe based ska band. A few libations and many songs later my fatigue got the best of me and I headed home amidst the still-falling snow.

The following morning I awoke to every skier's dream: fresh powder and a cloudless sky. With the sun out in full force, Canyon Lodge was springing to life for the SnowSplash Weekend. Some daring skiers and boarders opted to cool themselves off by participating in the Pond Skim, where they tried to gather enough speed to cross the pond without getting wet. With free demos by Rossi and Burton, more Power Bars for the taking, and a plethora of drink specials at the Canyon 'Beach' combined with the copious powder, Mammoth fulfilled my spring skiing dreams.
