Summer Resorts 2002-Southern Rockies: Summit County, Colo.

posted: 01/01/2000

Summit County, Colo.
In winter, Breckenridge and Keystone are home to some of Summit County's best skiing. In summer, the offerings at these two mountain resorts are equally inspiring. And because they're so close to each other (10 scenic miles separate the two), staying at one means you can play at both.

Start your Summit adventure at Breckenridge, where Peak Eight's Summer Fun Park offers easy-access mountaintop activity served by the Colorado Superchair. From the summit, you can hike, bike or horseback ride. When you've had your fill of high-alpine exploits, shoot back to the base on the Alpine Superslide for a round of miniature golf. If you prefer your adventure off the beaten track, hike or bike any of the 200 miles of maintained dirt trails that network the area, or float your cares away on the Blue River in any manner of craft.

Where you stay depends on what you want. If shopping and whooping it up are prime vacation priorities, Breckenridge is the ticket. Families with small children and young teens will want to base themselves in Keystone, where convenience reigns. Stay in a Keystone property, and a Mountain Passport is included in the price. This allows you to choose from more than a dozen summertime activities, including horseback riding, mountain bike clinics and guided nature walks. And, of course, if you stay at Keystone, a romantic dinner at the Ski Tip Lodge is mandatory. There is no other mountain eatery like it. ¿D.K.
