The Ultimate Ski Day: Snowbird

The Ultimate Ski Day: Snowbird

posted: 01/01/2000

Snowbird 2:55pm-4:00pm Vertical: 7,200 feet

The day concluded at Snowbird where we were psyched to find ourselves way ahead of schedule. Rafferty and I foamed at the mouth in anticipation as we stared up at Snowbird's massive terrain from the parking lot. The steeps, rock bands, and enormous cliffs loomed as an expert skier's playground. We knew that we could spend the rest of our day skiing the radical terrain that lay beneath the tram.

Dave Fields, assistant director of public relations, toured us around the mountain showing us its secret powder stashes. He took us to the newly opened Mineral Basin that holds over 500-acres of bowl-like terrain. This steep run threw snow buckshot at us as buttery bumps exploded in our faces.

After exploring Mineral Basin, Fields took us under the tram down Great Scott for our last two runs of the day. Facing northeast, the snow resembled that of Alta's with its hero-like quality.

After beating ourselves silly on a last run of rock bands and steeps we ended the day on a pure high of exhaustion. We immediately took to the Cliff Spa for a hot tub, a swim, some sushi, and beers. What a great way to end the Ultimate Ski Day, Utah Style.
