Description: The AMC is the keeper of Eastern backcountry, and Pinkham Notch is the epicenter of the East's most extreme terrain, with Tuckerman Ravine and the Gulf of Slides a relatively short slog from AMC's headquarters there. Its Backcountry Ski Camp is designed for Alpine skiers who feel more comfortable with locked heels. The course runs two days (last year: March 23-25) and includes all technical equipment (except skis). It costs $406 for non-AMC members.

You'll travel by ski touring over frozen lakes and mostly flat terrain. At camp, you'll cut and split wood, cook over a fire, chop holes through the ice for water, and sleep on fur boughs in a canvas tent. Sound fun? You'll have the million bucks in the bag.

Description: Bolton boasts two great backcountry trips starting from the resort and ending at the famous Von Trapp Family Lodge. For intermediates, the trail concludes with a two-mile, 1,100-foot climb with views of the Stowe Valley and Lake Champlain. Experts should head off the top of Lift 4 to Wooded Peak and ski to Waterbury Dam. Both trips are unguided, but contact Fred or Art at the Nordic Center, and they might take you out for fun.
