Before 1995, Snowbasin was Utah's redheaded stepchild, with limited terrain and slow lifts. Then it was named the site of the 2002 Olympic downhill. New lifts were installed, fancy lodges were built, and 3,200 acres became lift accessible. And guess what? Snowbasin is still the redheaded stepchild. So here, you can surf snuff, crowd free.

The Vitals

Top elevation: 9,350 feet
Vertical drop: 2,959 feet
Snowfall: 326 inches (7,700')
Skiable Acres: 3,200
Phone: 888-437-5488
Web: snowbasin.com

Adrenaline:
Traverse left off the Allen's Peak face to No Name, and drop into 1,500 verts of continuous 35-degree pitch.

Accumulation:
Don't expect the lake-effect six-inchers that come regularly to Little Cottonwood Canyon. Try to time your trip to coincide with the February dumps. Case in point: More than three feet fell in four days in February 2001, snowing out an Olympic-preview downhill race.

Après:
Do beers and chips with homemade salsa while bands play on the patio at the Olympic Day Lodge. Otherwise, it's a 25-minute drive to Rooster's on 25th Street in Ogden.
