Cortina is a picture-perfect Alpine town, with cobbled streets wending their way amidst the jagged Dolomites. The 80-room Hotel de la Poste epitomizes Italian style, from tapestries and antique pewter to Tyrolean furniture. Run by the Manaigo family since it opened in 1835, the hotel was originally a traditional inn and post office. Now it exudes a Fellini-esque chic with its coffered ceilings, stucco walls, marble floors and gilded mirrors. It's minutes by shuttle bus to the slopes, though skiing in Cortina means sleeping late, starting late, enjoying a long lunch, and getting back in time for the evening passagiatta (stroll) through town alongside fur-clad Romans and Milanese. Dinner is also fashionably late, with pasta and game house specialities. You'll need sustenance, too, because the local discos don't close until dawn. Certain families leave their luggage from season to season at the Poste. After your stay here, you might be inclined to do the same.Doubles start at about $235, including breakfast and dinner.
