Where to ski, stay and dine in Lake Placid

Whiteface Mountain 225 skiable acres; 3,166 vertical feet; summit elevation 4,386 feet, 75 trails plus 30 off-piste acres in The Slides. Tickets: adults $62; seniors (65-69) and teens (13-19) $49; children (7-12) $32. Under 7 and over 69 ski free.

Lodging Lake Placid Lodge has 17 rooms and 17 cabins built in rustic Adirondack style ($400-$1,300; 877-523-2700; lakeplacidlodge.com). The Mirror Lake Inn predates even the 1932 games ($190-$825; 518-523-2544; mirrorlakeinn.com). Golden Arrow Hotel is lakeshore in the heart of town ($99-$379; 800-582-5540).

Dining Nicola's serves Greek and Italian fare (518-523-4430). Lake Placid Pub & Brewery offers pub food worthy of its excellent microbrews (518-523-3813). The dining room at the Mirror Lake Inn serves elegant cuisine to live piano accompaniment.

Getting There From New York City (five hours): Take I-87 North to Exit 30, then Route 9 North to Route 73, then Route 73 North to Lake Placid.
