People Will Ski That

When Barry Corbet skied Rendezvous Mountain in 1960 with Paul McCollister, helping him evaluate it as a possible ski resort, Corbet looked at a ridiculously steep jump-in couloir and said, "People will ski that." Five years later, McCollister opened Jackson Hole and named the resort's instant signature run Corbet's Couloir.

Corbet, a Jackson instructor and guide, was a pioneering alpinist, part of many first ascents. "Incredibly strong-physically, mentally and spiritually," Bill Briggs, Jackson's ski school director, says of Corbet, a longtime friend. Corbet died earlier this season at 68, leaving behind a ski run that will forever be a measuring stick of both a skier's ability and daring.
