There are a variety of ways to cut a ski trail. Here’s one that’s not highly recommended: a forest fire. One roared through 48,000 acres in Sun Valley, Idaho, in 2007, stopping just short of the ski mountain. The resort helped make sure of that, battling the fire with water guns from its snowmaking system. An unintended upside of the forest fire? The Burn, an out-of-bounds favorite due to its unique charred beauty and killer treeskiing. Duck out near the top of International, rage through the trees, then cut back inbounds and hit the Warm Springs base area. Voilà: Lift-accessed wildfire skiing. Just don’t get burned and end up down the wrong drainage. Ski it with a local.
