Ranked No. 5 in our Resort Guide last year, Beaver Creek is as family friendly in the summer months as it is when the snow's falling.

The service, luxury, top-notch dining and village amenities upon which Beaver Creek has built its winter reputation don't disappear when the snow melts. Summers here are full of variety and free of crowds. Here are a few summer events on the calendar worth checking out:

For the family: Thursday nights in July and August bring a classic Western tradition to town with the Beaver Creek Rodeo. Naturally, bare-back bronc and bull riding are the main events, but favorites like mutton bustin', the calf scramble and burro racing give kids and parents a chance to Cowboy Up! Admission: $10–$22; kids under 12 are free. July 1, 8, 15, 22 and August 5, 12, 19, 6–8 p.m.

For the athlete: Giving the traditional triathlon a bit of high-altitude attitude, the XTERRA Mountain Cup combines a 1.5 mile lake swim with a 25km mountain bike ride and 9km trail run. Individuals and teams are encouraged to sign up. There will also be a free kids duathlon. July 17.

For the foodie: Learn to cook like the local pros. Chefs from Beaver Creek and around the Vail Valley offer free culinary demonstrations every Saturday and on festival weekends in the Bon Appetite tent in the village. 5 p.m.

For arts patrons: Mary Chapin Carpenter, Keb Mo and Herbie Hancock are on this summer's concert lineup at Beaver Creek's Vilar Center for the Performing Arts. In August, the center presents a production of West Side Story. Cool boy!

For the beer fanatic: Accordians, oom-pah music and lederhosen are only as fun as the beer that goes with them. Wrap up the summer with a pint and a bratwarst at Oktoberfest. Whatever you do, don't miss the Alpenhorn contest on September 5.
