Bretton Woods

Route 302 Bretton Woods, NH 03575 603-278-3333 website: http://www.mountwashingtonresort.com
Ranked No. 8 overall by readers in our 2010 Resort Guide
By Edith Thys Morgan

Active family seeking outdoor winter adventure to please all ages? Meet your match. Readers give Bretton Woods Top 5 rankings in Family Programs, Snow, Scenery, Grooming and Service. This “hidden jewel,” with its historic grand hotel and stunning views of Mount Washington, even ranks no. 1 for Weather, thanks to its own microclimate (wind-sheltered by day, upslope flurries by night). And you don’t really know “The Woods” until you’ve skied its woods— easily accessed glades sprinkled across the mountain. Nothing pegs the challenge meter, but that’s fine for many families, and New England’s longest zipline canopy tour offers ample thrills. Need more activity? Check out the dogsled tours and 62 miles of spectacularly scenic nordic trails. Need less? Relax with luxurious rooms, a spa and fine dining at the opulent Mount Washington Hotel. —E.T.M.

+Good natural snow when no one else has it.

-A bit sleepy, and runs are short.
