New Ski Resort For British Columbia

Golden, B.C., Mar. 7--British Columbia and GoldenPeaks Resort Inc., a subsidiary of the Dutch company Ballast NedamInternational, signed a master development agreement that would effectivelyturn Whitetooth ski hill into a $200-million resort called Kicking HorseMountain Resort.

Located 260 kilometers west of Calgary, the new resortwill be the first new alpine ski resort in the Canadian Rockies in 25 years.The seven-year development will include an 8-person gondola, five newlifts, a mountaintop restaurant, a new base lodge, commercial and retailspace, four hotels, 150 condos, 297 townhomes and 65 single-family chalets.Installation of the gondola and construction of the mountaintop restaurant,the base lodge and the first of four hotels is expected to be completed bythe second half of 2000.

In addition to snow sports, the 4,000-acre resort will also offer summeractivities such as mountain biking, hiking and horseback riding.Grouse Mountain Resorts Ltd., a private company that owns and operatesGrouse Mountain outside of Vancouver, will operate and manage Kicking Horse.
