Hot and Cold Openings

Nov. 16, 2001--A number of Northeastern resorts, benefiting from a handful of cold days and nights and some natural snowfall, this week joined the ranks of those already open for the season across the U.S. The latest openings come as temperatures in the West have held steady at above normal, forcing a handful of Pacific Northwest and Rockies resorts to postpone planned openings this week until the middle of next week.

Recently opened ski areas include Sugarloaf and Sunday River, Maine; Bretton Woods, Loon Mountain and Waterville Valley, N.H.; Woodbury Ski and Racket, Conn, Hunter Mountain, N.Y.; Okemo Mountain and Stowe, Vt.; Breckenridge and Winter Park, Colo. and Boreal, Calif., all on limited terrain. Spirit Mountain, Minn., Eldora, Colo. and Squaw Valley, Calif. all plan on opening to skiers tomorrow.

Forecasts in the west foresee clear skies and mild temperatures through early next week as the east was faced with unseasonably warm temperatures today, but expects a return to colder temperatures over the weekend.
