Elk Mountain, PA, Jan. 31--Big powder at Elk Mountain. A whopping 18 inches of snow fell overnight, making for a base of 80-96 inches--one of the biggest in the East. The ski area got the best of a storm which covered much of the mid-Atlantic region with sleet and ice.
La Nina has been good to the mid-Atlantic region, bringing plenty of lake effect snow and providing cold temperatures for snowmaking. Many ski areas in New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia are boasting bigger base depths than resorts in Colorado and Utah.With a base of 107 inches at the summit, Snowshoe Resort in West Virginia has stopped making snow.
The most recent storm also brought snow to parts of Vermont and New Hampshire and is expected to move into New England later today. So far the big winners in this storm:
