Arapahoe Basin will celebrate this coming Sustainable Slopes Day, February 21, 2004, by officially kicking off its new Climate Club. For $20, a resort guest may receive discounts at A-Basin as well as contribute to the decrease of global warming. By joining the club, a purchaser buys Emission Reduction Credits, which are generated by renewable energy companies. Membership credits account for a one-ton reduction in global warming pollutants. Club members are eligible for discounts in the Arapahoe Basin restaurant, bar, ski school, rental shop, and retail shop. Members also can receive discounted lift tickets including a $15 lift ticket on Sustainable Slopes Day (February 21,2004) and Earth Day (April 22, 2004). The Climate Club card can be purchased at the Arapahoe Basin Season Pass Office or online at arapahoebasin.com.

Other environmental successes at Arapahoe Basin include:

  • Snowmaking
2003/04 was Arapahoe Basin's first full snowmaking season. A-Basin installed an airless snowmaking system that uses half the electricity of a conventional air/water system. During the snowmaking season, A-Basin maintains stream flow levels that minimize impacts to aquatic life in the North Fork of the Snake River. The ski area has built a small reservoir and steadily diverts a small amount of water and stores that water for later use. By having the reservoir, Arapahoe Basin has eliminated to need to create large fluctuations in the stream.

  • Employee Environmental Fund
Arapahoe Basin employees can donate a portion of their paychecks to the Employee Environmental Fund. The ski area matches employee donations. Since inception, the fund has donated over $5,000 to the Friends of the Eagles Nest Wilderness and the Continental Divide Land Trust.

  • Carpooling and Public Transportation
Arapahoe Basin has worked to support carpooling and public transportation in an effort to reduce global warming pollutants. Guests that ride to Arapahoe Basin with four or more people in their car are eligible for a 40% discount on lift tickets. Additionally, the ski area has provided a link on its website to Skicarpool.com, a website dedicated to promoting ride sharing opportunities to ski areas. Working with the Summit Stage, Arapahoe Basin has supported a free transportation link between the ski area and Summit County communities.
