Stratton Mountain is a combination of two polar-opposite resorts. On the one hand, perfectly manicured trails (no. 5) and speedy lifts (no. 5), along with fine dining (Verde, The Sushi Bar) and ample ski-in, ski-out lodging make this an upper-crust resort for 50-somethings. On the other hand, a dive bar (The Green Door), lively après (Grizzly’s) and one of the Easts best terrain parks (no. 3) make Stratton a jibber’s paradise and, as one reader puts it, a “great family mountain” with something for both adults and teens. Readers complain that it’s expensive (no. 24). They also frequently describe Stratton as “crowded” and “not very challenging.” This year, however, Stratton has spent a chunk of cash to carve out four new sparsely treed trails to the underused Sunbowl.
