The Canyons

One of The Canyons’ greatest strengths can also be a weakness. For example, there is a perfect peak and ideal terrain for every kind of skier at this gigantic resort. But the lack of crowds on those peaks is partly due to the fact that it’s hard to get to them, or even from one canyon to another (the ski area boasts eight). “Great snow, huge mountain, good challenge, not crowded,” says one reader, echoing the sentiments of many others. However, as some added, “It is a little difficult to navigate—it can take a long time to get from one side of the resort to the other.” Remember, this is still Utah: The snow at The Canyons can rival that of its more famous Utah neighbors both in depth and quality. And the laughably short drive from baggage claim to the Flight of the Canyons Gondola (30 minutes) puts The Canyons at the front of the line for convenience, a key advantage these days.

/ What’s New / The resort’s already family-friendly base village is suddenly dotted with new high-end properties, including the Dakota Mountain Lodge (part of the Waldorf-Astoria group) and the slopeside Escala Lodges.

/ Mandatory Run / Ninety-nine 90 is a must-ski for anybody who wants drop-dead gorgeous views on a sunny day and a big drop when the snow gets deep.

/ Local Tip / After a big snow, hit the lower Super Condor Express lift first; the higher altitude of the flagship Ninety-nine 90 lift can mean delayed openings due to inclement weather at the summit.

Sure, Utah's 13 resorts are known for their unbelievable snow. But the drinking scene has remained, well, questionable. Not anymore: Utah's changed their liquor laws. And that's only one of many improvements the state boasts for the 2009-10 ski season.

As Utah’s Biggest resort comes of age, it’s still hard to characterize. But who cares? Because when it comes to ski terrain, multiple personality disorder isn’t a bad thing.

Forty-eight hours of nonstop snow? Yes, please. Snowfall in October is usually measured in inches. Not this year. A heavy winter storm that settled over Colorado late Tuesday night is dropping huge flakes that are accumulating in feet along the Front Range and throughout Colorado Rockies.
