Durango, CO May 14, 2003 - Durango Mountain Resort is gearing up for summer with an action packed calendar full of events, activities and competition. Set in the majestic San Juan Mountains, Durango Mountain Resort touts one of the most beautiful locations in the Rockies, with epic views of the Needles and Twilight Peaks and cool temperatures all summer long. The scenery provides the perfect backdrop for just about every mountain adventure imaginable.

Purgatory Village is activity-central with the alpine slide, climbing walls, human maze, mini-golf, disc golf and the summer chairlift (Twilight Lift) for scenic rides, hiking and mountain biking. More than 50 miles of trails criss-cross Purgatory Mountain, including the 1990 World MTB Championship course.

Ongoing summer programs include the popular Kids Summer Adventure Camp, the most exciting day camp in the Rockies, taking children ages 6-13 out into the San Juan National Forest for hiking, mountain biking, climbing, ropes course, teamwork exercises, environmental education and more. New this year, Friday field trips will focus on regional cultural attractions. For the rest of the family, the San Juan Mountains Association runs free guided naturalist hikes every Friday, and also sponsor the unique Trek and Lunch with Llama series on select dates. Other resort activities include climbing trips with Animas City Rock and guided fly fishing with Animas Valley Anglers.

Summer events include the 18th Annual Music in the Mountains Classical Concert series, running July 26 - August 8 under the guidance of Maestro Mischa Semanitzky, bringing together more than 200 performers through 30 concerts --12 in the Festival Tent at Durango Mountain Resort. The three-week classical music festival features world-renowned soloists taking part in orchestra, chamber music and conservatory faculty and student concerts. DMR's annual Celtic Fest touts an international line-up of bands with headliner Seven Nations on June 26. The Will Fjerstad Memorial Wine Festival raises money for the Columbine Children's Fund on August 20-22, and the San Juan Brewfest rounds out the summer on September 4.

Adventure racing kicks off the summer competition season with the AdventureXstream Series back for its third year, including 12 and 24-hour events, on June 12. The Red Bull Divide & Conquer mountain sports relay makes its American debut on June 20, featuring trail running, paragliding, kayaking and mountain biking. The Durango MTB 100 takes place July 17 with 100 mile, 100 kilometer and relay events. Mountain biking fittingly rounds out the summer in this two-wheel mecca with the NORBA National Championships from August 26-29. Voted as "Best Mountain Bike Event of 2003" by Velo News, this year's Finals promises to be bigger and better as the best mountain bikers in the world compete in Cross-Country, Short Track, Mountain Cross and Downhill on the famed Purgatory Mountain course. The event is perfect for competitors and spectators alike as divisions range from Beginner to Pro.

New this summer, the Purgatory Downhill Series will run Sundays from June 27 - July 25. The NORBA sanctioned mountain bike event will be open to all levels and divisions, with the course running down 1000 vertical feet over sections of the NORBA, World Cup and World Championship courses used here at Purgatory Mountain since 1990.
