Kostelic Skips Training, but on Start List

February 14, 2006

SAN SICARIO, Italy (AP Press Release)—Multi-medal favorite Janica Kostelic, a triple gold winner in the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics, skipped the final training session for the women's downhill Tuesday. A Croatian team official blamed a high pulse.

"She was not feeling good, her pulse was high and she decided not to race, said Croatian skiing director Vedran Pavlek.

Kostelic was at the start house when she made a last-minute decision not to go. Having already skied the first two training sessions, she can still compete in Wednesday's medal race.

"She's just resting in her apartment. Maybe it's the start of a sickness, Pavlek said.

Kostelic won a slalom race in Germany earlier this month, despite skiing with the flu.

Croatia team spokesman Ozren Mueller said Kostelic had been placed on the race start list and that a final decision on her status would be made Wednesday.

"We will decide in the morning, Mueller said.

Kostelic has battled medical problems her entire career. Besides numerous knee operations, she also had her thyroid removed and missed the entire 2003-04 season.
