This duplex, called The Peaks, lies in the center of the planned new base village for Schweitzer. It's a ski-in/ski-out unit with rounded walls, an angular design and three decks. "It doesn't look like traditional northern Idaho architecture," says listing agent Shawn Taylor, who at 33 was the oldest entrant in the 1998-99 extreme snowboarding championships at Crested Butte, Colo. (He finished ninth.) "It's kind of like a Monterey Bay home that overlooks the ocean."

The 400-unit base village planned by Harbor Properties (the new owner of Schweitzer Mountain) will be built on two parking lots that now flank The Peaks.

"A lot of people are holding inventory back right now," says Taylor. "Because of the ski area's recent receivership there was a lot of uncertainty, and then people were dumping properties. Now, with the new owners, people are optimistic and expecting a lot of appreciation. Inventory levels are pretty low right now."

Deals are to be had in older units built in the Seventies and Eighties, and Schweitzer's prices don't approach those of bigger, better-known resorts: The most expensive listing in December was a $725,000 home.

Perhaps the most coveted property in the Flathead Valley lies on Whitefish Lake, at the base of Big Mountain. This hillside home includes 150 feet of lake frontage and is situated five minutes from the town of Whitefish and 30 minutes from the ski slopes.

In an uncommon touch for a Western home, the house's interior is sheathed in hickory floors and cabinets. The whole house is electronically smart, with camera monitors, intercoms and battery backup.

"It's set up for about anything you want to do in there," says Steve Boone, a sales associate with Chuck Olson Real Estate. "You could run a telemarketing job from there."

In addition to the attached garage there is a free-standing, 30-by-40-foot shop on the property. The master bedroom, great room, kitchen and library all lie on the upper floor, which is accessed from the driveway at the rear of the house. Downstairs the ceilings are an unusual 12 feet high. "I think we're being viewed favorably as an alternative to Lake Tahoe, price-wise," says Boone. Many buyers come from Silicon Valley, Phoenix and Texas.

Resort development, including the Iron Horse Golf Club, has driven per-square-foot building costs here from $125-$150 for upper-end construction five years ago to $200-$300 today.
