This summer, Shanty Creek celebrates its 40th anniversary by cranking up the family fun machine. Disc golf tournaments, outdoor movies, paintball competitions and '60s parties are all on the summer docket, lively additions to a resort already brimming with things to do.
Shanty is known for golf, with four courses, including Arnold Palmer and Tom Weiskoph layouts. But if golf isn't your game, there's tennis (eight courts), or you can grab a fly rod and try to entice some rainbows out of the Cedar River, which winds through the resort.
With 4,500 acres and three villages set in northern Michigan's pristine countryside, Shanty Creek is expansive. Drop the kids off at Camp Gandy one day, and while they make new friends, you can enjoy a village-to-village hike or mountain bike ride along the resort's extensive trail system. Then soothe sore muscles with a massage or a soak at the Wellness Spa.
Be sure to book a table at the resort's newest restaurant, La Vigna Italian Bistro in the Village at Cedar River. Activity-packed days merit carbo-loaded nights. -
