Out With the Old, In With the New

Out With the Old, In With the New

Instruction
By Mike Rogan

Your new shaped skis can allow you to break old rules and take your skiing to the next level. Here's how to do it!

Look at these two skiers. Stu, the frowning guy (right), skis an older way-but on modern skis. He had to work hard as these photos were taken, because he was fighting his gear. By the end of the day he had a sore back. Mike is grinning because he skied effortlessly, allowing his state-of-the-art equipment to dictate technique.

"Old" techniques developed because skiers rode skis that were less stable than today's shaped skis. To find a solid balance point, skiers had to stop each skid by setting an edge. "New" techniques have evolved because shaped skis offer a more solid, secure surface to work from. Today almost anyone can learn to carve.

Older movements are not wrong or bad, but they tend to be excessive. Newer movements tend to be more direct, accurate and powerful. Plenty of good skiers use older techniques. Some very good skiers use the newer ones. Great skiers use newer moves often, old moves sometimes and a combination of both when necessary.
