Skiers visiting Mt. La Crosse in southern Wisconsin frequently end the day at the Freighthouse restaurant in downtown La Crosse for a memorable après-ski meal.

Known for both the cuisine and the ambiance, the Freighthouse is a National Historic Site that was originally constructed in 1880 as the Milwaukee Road Freighthouse. Owner John Rieder renovated the building in 1978, while carefully maintaining its historical railroad roots. The main dining room is known for its lofty space and grand timbers. Three other dining rooms, complemented with antique bars and fireplaces, offer a more intimate atmosphere.

Entrées ($13.95-$25.95) range from slow-roasted prime rib and naturally aged steaks to Canadian scallops cooked in a butter and wine sauce with fresh mushrooms, Alaskan king crab and a daily fresh fish selection. And, of course, in a state known for its beer, the bar offers an impressive selection ranging from locals to imports and microbrews. The Freighthouse also offers an impressive list of single-malt scotches. The biggest bonus is the live entertainment on weekends during ski season.
