New York, NY, June 28--After a slow start, skier visits forthe 1999-2000 season rose 4 percent over last season thanks to aneight-week run of good weather and good snow in January and February, according to Ski Areas of New York (SANY). The final tally was 3,440,600,up from 3,303,492 skier visits in 1998-99.

SANY also attributes part of the increase to the development of anawareness and branding effort done in partnership with New York's EmpireState Development that used TV, print, radio and an Internet promotion. "Itis undeterminable as to how many visits were created by the $2.5 million TVcampaign...However, it is believed to be significant," said Rob Megnin, president of SANY.

The ski season came to an abrupt halt in March as warm weather moved in andshut most areas down early. In fact, unofficially, the SANY stated that itmight have been the worst March ever.
